Writing a Character Reference is a powerful way to recognize and praise the unique strengths of others. Character References are great as job references, as well. The key is being specific -- this isn't just a generic "atta boy." This is a a formula for articulating what is truly special about someone you know. It's proof that you have been paying attention to his/her strengths as a human being! |
*This tutorial contains all the resources you will need to write a truly stellar Character Reference.
Find Clear Character Definitions
- Go to http://www.characterfirst.com/aboutus/qualities/ to view my favorite list of character qualities defined.
- Select the two or three that seem to fit the person like a glove.
- You will use the actual definitions in your Character Reference.
- Try to pick character traits that bring up concrete examples of things the person had done or said. THIS IS THE KEY TO A TRULY GREAT REFERENCE.
A Winning Format
The following format works. I have used it for many successful character references. This harnesses the "DIB" format created by Character First. Here is the formula:
- Intro
- First (#1) Character Quality
- Definition
- Example (Illustration)
- Benefit
- Second (#2) Character Quality
- Definition
- Example (Illustration)
- Benefit
- Third (#3) Character Quality
- Definition
- Example (Illustration)
- Benefit
- Conclusion
